Setup Remastersys to backup your system to your storage drive

Under Construction!

Now that we have installed a 3 partition install of Klikit with a storage partition, I'll show you how to setup remastersys so it automatically saves the backup .iso file to a directory in your storage partition.  Each time you do a backup remastersys will overwrite the last backup.  So your entire system will always be as up to date as your last backup.  A backup will take 10 to 15 minutes according to the amount of data on your system partitions / or root and /home partitions.  Those are the two partitions that remastersys will be backing up.  It will pay no attention to the storage partition except to write the backup .iso file there.  This allows you too reinstall in case of accidentally breaking your system without losing anything if your last backup is recent.  All the stuff in your storage will be unchanged.  I will show you in, How to reinstall from a remastersys backup disc, and only reinstall the bits you want.  For instance, if your /home partition is more up to date then your last backup.  You can reinstall just the / or root partition without affecting the /home partition.

Left click once to start remastersys and password popup will appear.

Put in your password and click on OK.  A dialogue box will appear.

If you are using Linux networking and have mounted shares you should unmount them before running remastersys backup.  If your network runs on Samba shares though, this is not necessary.  Do close any open programs as well.

Now we can modify the remastersys configuration file to store it's backup .iso file in it's own folder on our storage partition.  Click to highlight the modify config line and click OK.

Click to select Working Directory and click OK.

Change the line as shown to /media/storage/remastersys

Click to select Go back to main menu, and click on OK.

If you are ready to do a backup of your new install, you can try it now.  Make sure you don't have any programs running or any Linux network shares mounted.  Click to select Backup Complete System including User Data and click on OK.  Now is a good time to get a drink, go to the bathroom or whatever, just leave the computer alone completely until backup tells you it's through.  It will take about 10 to 15 minutes depending on the amount of data, and the hardware you are running to do the backup.  If you don't want to do a backup now, click to select Quit Remastersys Backup, and you are done.  Now remastersys is setup to save to your storage partition.

Click on OK and it's off and running.

So it's all done, so click OK.

Click on Quit Remastersys Backup to select and hit the OK button.  Now let's check that remastersys has saved the .iso file to your storage partition.  Click on the Computer icon at the top left of your desktop and in the Konqueror window which opens look at the list of hard disk icons in the upper right.  Your storage partition should be the one on the top.  If you mouse over it the popup should say sda3.  Click on that entry.

If by some circumstance there is no folder icon labeled remastersys than use the back arrow key to go back to the last Konqueror screen and right click on the hard drive icon for storage and click on the reload entry in the popup menu.  Then go back to the storage directory and it should be in there.  By default remastersys names the .iso file custom.iso, you can change the name to whatever you want as long as you have the .iso on the end.  I usually change it to a name with the date of the backup in it, so I have a reference.  So we have come to the end of this segment.    ...cosbear
